Turntables weren't supposed to make it to this century. They were supposed to be obliterated by digital media. Once on the brink of extinction, record players are making a comeback and the Indian market is witnessing the launch of several swanky new turntables, including high end turntables. Here are some of the latest record player offerings in the country:

#1: Clearaudio Concept

This record player ticks all the boxes – it delivers stupendous performance, looks good and it is German made, which says a lot about its build quality, engineering genius and reliability. However, all these goodies come at a hefty price tag. To its credit, the Clearaudio concept is versatile and easy to use. It can be used to play 33 1/3, 45 and 78 rpm records. We live in the era of instant gratification and many people cannot be too bothered to install cartridges in tonearms. So the record player comes preconfigured at the factory. Place the platter, install the belt and you are ready to roll! The Clearaudio Concept shines the brightest among all the new turntables in India. Click to see full specifications. Paired with the highly capable OM 5E from Ortofon, the Essenstial II is easily one of the best new mid-range turntables in India (as of 2018). As you may already know, Ortofon is one of the most well known cartridge makers in the world. It is based in Denmark and sells more than 5 lac cartrides per year. The essential II has a smooth, synchronous motor and produces a dynamic sound. It is well built and quite easy to set-up even though it's a manual. It runs as two speeds – 33 1/3 and 45 rpm. #3: Pioneer PLX 1000

This is a high-torque, direct drive record player. The unique thing about the PLX 1000 is that it's suitable for both Djs as well as audiophiles. Purists usually prefer belt driven turntables as the belt offers better isolation from the motor and this results in a clear sound output. Djs, on the other hand, have no time to fiddle around – they need to start up their records in quick time and often engage in 'scratching'. The Pionner PLX 1000 produces a starting torque of 4.5 kilograms per centimeter (or higher) and this allows it to reach speeds of 33 1/3 rpm in just three tenths of a second! Remarkably, it does this without compromising on sound quality. Weighing in at a substantial 13.1 kg, this 2 speed turntable offers a lot of bang for you buck.

#4: Crosley Snap Portable USB Turntable

The Crosley Brand is inpired by Powel Crosley, who was the first person to mass produce affordable radios for the common people. The Crosley snap portable turntable is shipped from the US but the platforms that sell it offer convenient features such as free shipping, cash on delivery and so on. The record player spins at three speeds, namely 33 1/3, 45 and 78 rpm. It is equipped with a USB feature and inbuilt 'full range' speakers. The package includes software for ripping/editing audio and for the creation of MP3s. Thus, this turntable serves as a bridge between digital and analog music. The brass snap closure adds a cool vintage touch.

#5: Proj-ject Elemental with OM 5E Ortofon Cartridge

The first thing that strikes you about the Pro-ject Elemental is its fascinating design. It hs an elongated deck that has been carved out of a single piece of wood. This design is not just for visual appeal though. It serves a definite purpose – the motor, bearing and the tonearm are in alighnment for extra smooth musical output. Even though this is an entry level offering from Pro-ject, it handles complex tracks with ease and produces punchy, entertaining notes. The music sounds emotional and detailed; it is somewhat comparable to a live performance. The OM 5E cartridge lends added precision to this already capable record player. The Elemental is very easy to set-up. It's also terrific value for money. It is a top contender for the best new audiophile grade turntable in IndiaNote: We Price Match.
