Best Speaker in India Under 10,000 – Swans M10 2.1

.

.

.

If you’re looking to buy a speaker in India, you’ll come across countless options starting from low end models with a triple digit price tag to state-of-the-art music systems that are the last word in audio technology. However, for the scope of this article, we’ll stick to speakers that fall below the 10,000 rupee mark. Many students, working professionals and families want a good speaker system for everyday listening without shelling out a fortune. I hope that this write-up will help them to make an informed buying decision.

I firmly believe that the Swans M10 is an excellent candidate to be the crowned as the best speaker in India under 10000. I am not just saying this because I have a strong affinity for the brand, but after carefully studying the speaker for well over 7 months.

.

I have spoken to several owners, read reviews on forums, amazon, flipkart, talked to hardcore audiophiles and knowledgeable people and they all have said only good things about the M10. I have compared the sound signature with some of the other popular models in the price bracket and even though audio is highly subjective, I firmly believe that the Swans M10 offers the best experience for your money.

.

So what makes the M10 so good that I am calling it one of the best speakers in India under 10k?

.

Well, the thing that shines out the most about the Swans M10 is its versatility. This 2.1 setup is good for almost all types of audio – be it music, movies or even small house-parties. Often, 2.1 setups are not very clear in terms of vocals and dialogues. This is because as 2.1 systems have a dedicated sub-woofer, the bass can overpower the mids and highs. However, this is not at all the case with the M10. The bass is adequate – it generates a good thump but it does so without interfering with the other sound frequencies. The result is an extremely well balanced, almost magical combination of tight bass along with sonorous mids and detailed highs.

.

I’ll go ahead and extol some of the M10’s virtues:

.

1) Looks: Now-a-days, a lot speakers place an emphasis on style and aesthetics – you’ll come across some really cool, aerodynamically shaped models and also a lot of weird looking ones. The M10 keeps it classy though – it looks surprisingly handsome but not unconventional in any way – just like a sleek Mercedes or the iconic bobber motorcyle that never goes out of style.

.

The more expensive Swans models such as the M50W and the M10 feature wooden panels on the sides. The M10 has real wood casing too..but it comes with a more eye-catching gloss finish. This gives it a lot of appeal and the Swans logo looks absolutely killer on a black colored M10. However, thanks to our country’s obsession with white, I have seen more White colored M10s than black ones, although the latter really looks way more bad-ass (IMO).

.

The M10 is a looker, not in a frantic ‘hey notice me I am trying so hard to be cool and different’ way, but in a dignified fashion that blends the classic and the contemporary. The blue light around the volume knob looks cool in a dark room – I often feel like I am sitting in a ritzy lounge.

.

Often, I have asked guests to guess the Swans M10’s price….of course these people didn’t know much about audio. They were taking wild guesses based purely on the appearance. Surprisingly, I usually got a number between the 15 to 22k range and the lowest that I ever got was 10,000 – which, by the way, is still way more than the actual cost. That’s how well finished and refined the M10 appears.

.

2) Sound: The M10’s sound is best described as musical, crisp and light, like a butterfly floating over a meadow of wildflowers. The sound is engaging, entertaining and the bass is authentic. If your sole purpose of buying a speaker is to make the floor shake coz that’s going to impress the guests, then I suggest you stay away from the M10. This speaker is not meant for bass-heads. It can deliver a strong performance while playing party and bass-oriented songs, but the M10 is loved for its musicality and balanced – not for its bass. Let me explain in detail:

.

Imagine you are at a concert. Ideally, the sound should be tuned so that you can experience all frequencies ‘as they are’. This way, you can enjoy all musical instruments and vocals equally –the acoustic experience will feel natural. This is exactly what the M10 specializes in recreating. It stays true to the original track without distorting the sound in any way.

.

Some speakers tend to be oriented towards high frequencies. Thus, the high notes sound very detailed but the performance seems to be empty as there is no ‘base’ (bass) to it – the base notes are not pronounced and something may feel off. However, many people are fond of this type of sound signature.

.

Certain speakers are manufactured in such a way that they make a heavier accent on the lower frequencies. This means that the higher notes become muddled and clouded. If the bass is too high, you will not be able to hear the vocals clearly. This can be frustrating as the music will not sound detailed. However, high bass is good for certain times – it is good for making your presence felt. Lower frequencies travel further and can be felt from afar. They are also good for parties when you don’t want to dwell too much on the details and just have some fun.

.

Different people like different types of sounds based on their personalities and mood at that particular point of time. Hence, a good speaker must be versatile. It should be able handle all types of songs – from devotional to death metal. The Swans M10 excels at this. You can tweak the bass settings to suit your tastes and the song that is being played.

.

3) Ease of use: The M10 is a no-nonsense speaker. It is very easy to connect and requires next to no maintenance. You have to be a little careful during the initial burn in period though. The speaker may sound a little flat before burning in but the sound ‘opens up’ beautifully after playing for about 60 to 70 hours. Here are my recommendations for burn in: play the speaker at low to medium volume and medium bass for about 80 hours. You can play any songs of your choice (preferably not bass boosted) or simply run through the burn-in tracks that are available in plenty on Youtube. Please don’t play at full volume and full bass during the burn in period. Remember, burning in a speaker is like running in the engine of a brand new car. Most manufacturers recommend driving the first 1000 km without going over 2500 rpm. The idea is to not stress the engine too much. The same goes for the drivers of speakers. If you burn in the M10 properly, it will last much longer and yield a much better return on your investment.

.

Note: The M10 comes with an RCA to 3.5 mm connecting cable as standard. Hence, you can connect it to almost any device that has a 3.5 mm audio output. You can also adapters to connect it to a different set-up. There are available almost everywhere and are dirt cheap. An important consideration however, is that since Swans is an American brand, the power cable has a two-pin plug. You’ll need to buy a two-pin to three-pin adapter in order to use the M10 in India. You can also use an old extension cord if you have one lying around – it has multiple socket configurations.

.

4) M10 vs Competition: The closest competitor of Swans M10 is the Logitech Z623. I personally think that the M10 is much more visually appealing than the Logitech.

.

I have listened to both speakers for extended time periods. I feel that M10 has a sweeter, richer sound. The Logitech has more bass but the overall sound doesn’t feel as premium and sophisticated as the M10s.

.

The Logitech has better specs on paper, but they don’t translate to much in the real world as the M10 delivers better performance.

.

The Logitech has THX certificate. While this does seem cool, again, the sound is nowhere close to audiophile quality.

.

The Z623’s bells and whistles do not enable to produce a more pleasing sound than the M10. Hence, they are meaningless in my opinion. The only place where the Z623 wins is with its 2 year warranty against the M10’s 1 year. Please note that the Logitech has a LIMITED hardware warranty while the M10 has a comprehensive warranty against all manufacturing defects. Still, I’ll give this one to the Logitech.

.

On the whole, Logitech is a much more mainstream brand in India since it also manfactures other computer accessories such as keyboards, mice, remotes and so on. Swans specializes in speakers only. It is a highly respectable American brand that is loved by audiophiles from all over the world.

.

If you want to choose without thinking much (herd mentality), you can simply opt for the Logitech Z623. However, if you are adventurous and want more bang for your buck, I suggest you give the M10 a try. (You can always return if you don’t like the product).

.

Who am I and why should you listen to me?

.

I am a budding music enthusiast. While it true that I work for a company that sells Swans speakers, it is also true that the same company deals in umpteen models of speakers (it is an online audio store – proaudiohome.com). I could have recommended any other popular model if my sole objective was to influence people to buy from our store. However, my aim is to introduce you to the M10 as it’s one hell of a speaker that is fast gaining a huge fan following in India (as evidenced by the rave reviews on multiple platforms and forums).

.

So what are other people saying about the Swans M10?

.

The M10 has been very well received by music enthusiasts in India. I have noticed that HiVi (which owns the Swans brand), does not spend too much on marketing. I don’t see the M10 being featured in ads in magazines or newspapers or even on forums and technology websites. This is a brand that sells purely through word of mouth advertising. This means that it has honest to goodness products with a sensible price tag. I feel that in a way, this approach is quite old school. Now-a-days brands spend way more on marketing than on product development itself.

.

I am posting a few links which feature Swans M10 Reviews:

Proaudiohome.com

Amazon

Flipkart

Youtube

As you can see, the Swans M10 is universally acclaimed!

Good review. You never mentioned the cons these speakers have. All the above mentioned point are correct about clarity and soundstage but these speakers seriously lack loudness. Cant even fill a 15x20 ft living room fades halfway. Also these are a bit too much bright. Treble is spiky and colored gives listening fatigue when listened for long duration.

Loudness really depends upon the source that is used. It is observed that the sound is a little less loud when the source is a mobile phone. However, if these are connected to a laptop, desktop or TV, the loudness is adequate for small rooms. A portable amp can also improve loudness. These are officially categorized as Desktop Speakers, and best listened to at a fairly close range. They are ideal for a room of size 10 x 12.The M10 is bright but then, it is geared towards people who like bright sound. The bass setting can be tweaked to produce a more balanced sound. I was listening to Martin Garrix - The Animals and was surprised at how well the M10 handled all frequencies, including bass. Also, after talking to tens of music lovers, I have realized that audio is very very subjective. Yes, the M10 is not suitable for people who love only bass. However, it is a worthy contender for the top entry level audiophile grade 2.1 system in India. I mean, people genuinely love it as evidenced by the hundreds of reviews on multiple platforms - not only in India but all over the world!
